The Changes in the Uterine Mucosa During Pregnancy. 29 Absorption of Dccidua. Absorption and gradual disappearance of some parts of the de-cidua, especially of the degenerated parts, takes place in all probabil-ity throughout pregnancy. The absorption may take place directlyinto the maternal circulation or by the agency of leucocytes. Butthere can be little doubt that it is also brought about by the agencyof the foetal epiblast, i. c., by the original layer of the blastocystwhich is applied early to the decidua, and which is met with through-out pregnancy as the irregular masses of syncytium attached to thesurface as well as those which extend into the substance of the de-cidua; also through the same material on the ends of the villi at-tached to the maternal tissues.
