The Changes in the Uterine Mucosa During Pregnancy. 669 the surrounding degenerating cells. They are probably active andgrowing and have not begun to degenerate. It is interesting to note that in the Vera no such appearance isfound save close to the serotina. There the degeneration is of a dif-ferent nature, more diffuse and slower. On the surface none of the pre-existing epithelium exists. Atintervals the villi are attached. Syncytium.—Between the villi are attached somewhat flattenedmasses of nucleated protoplasm—plasmodium or synctium. It ap-pears to be a much less uniform and more broken layer than inMerttens early specimen. No distinction into cells can be madeout. The protoplasm is finely granular and takes on a deep stain.The nuclei are irregularly rounded and also stain deeply. Some ofthese masses have only a single row of nuclei, others have several.In others the nuclei are irregularly distributed. At intervals themasses are thickened, resembling very large multi-nucleate
