Description
English: Plate III from An Atlas of Gas Poisoning by the American Red Cross and Medical Research Committee (American Red Cross, 1918).

Plate title: "Pallid type of asphyxia from phosgene poisoning, with circulatory failure." Text begins: "The cyanotic hue of the ears and lips, despite the general pallor caused by the failure of the circulation, indicate the intense want of oxygen from which the patient is suffering. Respiratory difficulty is shown in the strained effort of the muscles around the nostrils. ..."

The American Red Cross published this guide for the American Expeditionary Force in World War I, sometimes called the "chemists’ war." The chromolithograph plates of characteristic injuries were intended to help inexperienced officers identify the type of gas used in attacks.
