Summary[edit]

Description
English: An American painted lady (Vanessa virginiensis) feeds on nectar from a California brittlebush (Encelia californica). Brittlebushes bloom for several months from early spring to summer, whereas American painted ladies live for two to four weeks. This August photograph shows the adult American painted lady with vibrant summer coloring feeding from the California brittlebush which has begun showing signs of wilting. Photographed at the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance, California.
