Qai- >$i THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OFNATURAL HISTORY THE American Museum of Natural History wasfounded * and incorporated in 1869 for the purposeof establishing a Museum and Library of NaturalHistory; of encouraging and developing the study of Natu-ral Science; of advancing the general knowledge of kin-dred subjects, and to that end of furnishing popular in-struction. For eight years its home was in the Arsenal inCentral Park. The corner-stone of the present building inManhattan Square was laid in 1874 by President U. S.Grant.
