The British con-tinued their march toward New York,and lost nearly one thousand men uponthe way, by desertion. 1778. July 3. A great massacreof the inhabitants of Wyoming Valley,Penn., took place at the hands of morethan a thousand tories and Indians,headed by Col. John Butler. The ab-sence of able bodied men to serve in thecontinental army left the Valley almostdefenceless. 1778. July 4. Forty Fort, in Wyo-ming Valley was taken, and more cruel-tics committed. The whole region wasburned and desolated in the most scathingmanner. 1778. July 4. A duel was fougntbetween Generals Cadwalladcr and Con-way, because of the latters opposition toWashington. Conway was wounded,and thinking death near at hand, he wroteWashington a letter full of repentancefor all his dishonorable efforts.

John Laurens, an aide of Wash-ington, who challenged Lee because ofslighting remarks made by the latter con-cerning Washington in defending his ownconduct at Monmouth. Gen. Lee waswounded, but the affltir terminated with-out any very decisive character. 1778. July 8. The French fleetunder Count DEstaing, arrived off themouth of the Delaware a few days afterthe British fleet had sailed out of thatriver, on its way from Philadelphia toNew York. The first minister fromFrance to the United States, a Mr.Gerard, came in this fleet. 1778. July 29. The French fleetarrived at Narragansett Bay in obedi-ence to an oixler to unite with a landforce under Gen. Sullivan, in driving theBritish from Rhode Island. 1778. Aug. 6. M.
