But the rights of the companywere annulled the next year because ofthe non-payment of the rent. 1873. Jan. 30. An extreme coldwave was felt throughout New England.Prof. Loomis, of Yale Col- ims-isis.lege, reported that in a rec- Napoleon in.ord of the last hundred years therehad been no colder day. In twenty-nine Massachusetts towns, the averagewas 21,9 deg. below zero.

Matthew F.Maury, an eminent American student ofmarine and astronomical phenomena,died at Lexington, Va., aged sixty-sevenyears. He was born in Virginia, Jan.14, 1S06, and entered the naval serviceat nineteen years of age. His studiesbegan almost immediately upon this ap-pointment, and with scholarly tastes he1803-1873. pursued them all his life.
