Summary[edit]

Description
English: America's first mile of U.S. Route 1 in the United States of America at its most northern point in Fort Kent, Aroostook County, Maine. Facing east is Clair, Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada. The four flags on the east side of the road from left to right are the national flag of the United States of America (The Stars and Stripes), the national Canadian flag (The Maple Leaf), the State of Maine flag (Maine State Flag), and the national flag of France (Tricolour), representing the French heritage and French-speaking people on both sides of the border, most of whom speak English and French. The bridge on the left is for vehicles and pedestrians to enter one of the two countries at the U.S./Canadian Customs Border Crossing beyond the eastern end of the bridge. Beginning in the woods of northern Maine, U.S. Route 1 runs down the Eastern Seaboard through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, through the nation's capital of the District of Columbia (D.C.), Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, ending in the southernmost tip of Route 1 in the Florida Keys on the island and City of Key West, Monroe County, Florida, covering 14 states and the federal capital, the longest north-south highway in the United States, a distance of 2,369 miles (3,813 km) according to the 1989 Edition of the U.S. Numbered Highways by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
