Summary[edit]

Description

Ambulances at the ready (BUMED 09-7927-3), U.S. Navy BUMED Library and Archives

Description: Ambulances are lined up in Guam awaiting the arrival of the U.S.S. Tranquility (AH-14), which was carrying survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis (CA-35).

The U.S.S. Indianapolis (CA-35) was a U.S. Navy flagship which operated in the central Pacific during World War II. The ship famously carried parts of "Little Boy," the first nuclear weapon used in war. The Indianapolis was on her way to the Philippines when she was hit by a torpedo by the Japanese Navy. The ship sank on July 30, 1945 in twelve minutes. Only 316 of its original crew of approximately 1,200 survived.

The U.S.S. Tranquility (AH-14) was a hospital ship launched in 1944 and had a bed capacity of 802, while also being fully air-conditioned. She was dispatched to pick up the survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis in August 3, 1945. She was decommissioned in 1946.
