This scene is a merge of the yucatecan day of the death (known as Hanal Pixan), with the myth that mirrors are portals to the other world.

Summary

Description
English: In some Yucatan places people think that mirrors are portals to the "other world", thus some people in little towns keep them covered when they are not being used. In Ucu, Yucatán, México, during a documentary research about the diversity of the day of the death (Hanal Pixan) altars, I took this particular picture. The family who laid the altar covered the mirror so that the spirit doesn't see itself when it goes for its offerings. It is believed that if it is seen, it will never return.
