Summary[edit]

Description

alpine rabbitbrush, Ericameria parryi var. monocephala, Nevada, White Mountains, Mustang Mountain, Mustang Point, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh watershed, elevation 2989 m (9805 ft).

This variety of this widespread western North American shrub is limited to higher slopes and ridges of the central Sierra Nevada in eastern California, eastward to the adjacent rank of Great Basin ranges into far western Nevada. It is found on dry open sites between about 2800 and 3700 meters (9200-12100 feet). With the high elevation, late blooming time, and scruffy appearance even in flower, it is often overlooked, and was not documented here in the White Mountains until recent decades, even though common in the range.

In the background is Boundary Peak, highest point in Nevada at 4007 meters (13147 feet) elevation, with its north slopes free of snow at the end of summer.

Visible closer in are black sagebrush (Artemisia nova), spiny rushpink (Pleiacanthus spinosus), curlleaf rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus viscidiflorus), curlleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius intermontanus), and mountain sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana).
