Description
Deutsch: Ehemalige Universität, Universidad de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, in Almagro in der Provinz Ciudad Real (Kastilien-La Mancha/Spanien), Wappen, oben: Wappen der Dominikaner
English: ==Heraldry==
Juan de Mendoza y Luna, 3rd Marquis of Montesclaros (1571-1628), Viceroy of Peru, displaying arms of Mendoza impaling Luna
  • Right: Coat of arms of María Hurtado de Mendoza y Luna, youngest daughter of the II Marquis of Santillana and I Duke of Infantado. Arms of Mendoza, Duke of Infantado impaling Luna (A fess in chief a crescent inverted a bordure of panelas). She was the mother of Friar Fernando Fernández de Córdova y Mendoza (d.1550), Clavero of the Order of Calatrava, the founder of the Universidad de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a Dominican institution in the City of Almagro. These arms were later borne by Juan de Mendoza y Luna, 3rd Marquis of Montesclaros (1571-1628), Viceroy of Peru, as shown in his portrait (Mendoza impaling Per fess gules and argent in chief a crescent inverted counter-changed (Luna)).
  • Left: Coat of arms Cabra, being arms of Diego Fernández de Córdoba and Carrillo de Albornoz, II Count of Cabra, II Viscount of Iznájar and IV Lord of Baena, father of Friar Fernando Fernández de Córdova y Mendoza (d.1550), Clavero of the Order of Calatrava, the founder of the Universidad de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a Dominican institution in the City of Almagro. The Friar's eldest brother was Diego Fernández de Córdoba y Mendoza (1460-1525)
  • The Cross at top is thus either the Cross of Calatrava (also in the arms of the City of Almagro), or the Dominican Cross, both similar. A later panel made from decorative tiles affixed on the wall nearby shows the Dominican Cross. The building works concluded in 1538 and its final occupation took place in 1539
