Common mode of allosteric regulation known as feedback inhibition.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Excess products can bind to the regulatory site of an enzyme that catalyzes a biochemical pathway reaction causing an allosteric change in the shape of the enzyme's active site. This conformational change can then reduce the enzyme's affinity for its substrate, preventing its binding, and catalysis leading to the formation of the next product in a biochemical pathway. When the cell's metabolic needs call for it, the product at the regulatory site can come off, causing the enzyme's active site once again to exhibit a higher affinity for its specific substrate. This will activate the biochemical pathway from where the enzyme affinity or catalytic reaction increased.
