Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci is shown on his ship (Vespucci coat of arms depicted on gonfalon on forward mast, middle mast broken). Allegorical symbols include Minerva (science) at right, guiding Vespucci's ship, and a warrior carried by a sea-turtle.
