Notes | Clasps catching on to lower cover. Origin: Austria, Styria (Admont).Provenance:The Benedictine abbey, Admont, Austria. Original 12th-century binding of panelled red-brown leather over bevelled wooden boards, tooled in blind within a ruled framework: the front cover with an outer border formed by the repeated use of two tools with birds, and an inner border of two foliate tools, central compartment with four registers with the double impression of a stag (top and bottom), St Peter and flower heads at all interstices; the back cover with outer border with the repeated use of tools with Luke's winged ox and a bird beneath an angle, an inner border with a two-headed grotesque and a prancing deer, central compartment with two vertical tendrils, flower heads at interstices, remnant of one strap (small losses of leather at upper front joint and top edge of front cover and from centre of back cover, outer corners very slightly worn, six tiny wormholes in front cover and one in back, lacking two clasps and pins and upper spine tab). Parchment label on back cover with the title De mistica exposico[n]e sacrificiorum' in black ink and paper pressmark label '413' at the head of the spine. | |||
