The Axis Deer is found in India and Ceylon. It moves about mostlyin the night, hence, not being seen so much, it is believed to be rarer than itreally is. Although a pretty little creature, it is not as active or intelligentas the fallow deer. It can run very fast, but is not able to keep it up for anygreat distance. The axis deer is constantly hunted by tigers, because theyfind it much easier to pull down than to fight a full-grown buffalo. THE ROEBUCK. Another beautiful little deer is the Roebuck. Although easy to tame, itmakes a bad pet, as it is apt to use its horns upon anyone it does not like.When wounded it never offers any resistance, which is contrary to its familyinstinct. The roebucks live in large herds and pair off in couples. In con-trast to the fallow deer, the roebuck is found in the mountains and never inthe plains. It is an intelligent creature and rapidly adapts itself to change.It is another of the deer family that is used ornamentally in parks.
