Description |
English: This two-story frame house has been identified as the home of Alexander Allen or Alexander J. Allen, his son. Alexander Junior, called Dan, stands with his wife Anna Lucinda Gaylord Allen and her son Jay Gaylord in front of the door on the upper porch. The other people in the photo have not been identified, but, based on other photos, do not appear to be Allen family members. Dan Allen worked in his father's Seattle shipyard, and after the 1889 Seattle Fire, joined the Seattle Fire Deaprtment, where he served as an engine company captain. By 1898, he had returned to shipbuilding. The location of the house is unclear. While notes on the back of the photo indicate 2020 Dearborn, none of the Seattle city directories for the 1880s or 1890s list either family at this address. Perhaps the house belongs to a different owner. Stamped on verso: E.A. Sather, Photographer, [2901?] Pacific Ave., Tacoma, Wash. Handwritten on verso: Alexander Allen home " 2020 Dearborn? Came to Seattle in 1881. Was a shipbuilder and shingle Mill owner and fireman. In 1889 became Chairman of the County Commissioners.
