Summary: Studio portrait of Temporary Corporal (Cpl) Alexander Henry Buckley VC, 54th Battalion. Cpl Buckley was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery and self sacrifice" on 1 - 2 September 1918 at Peronne, France. During a hold up in an attack, Cpl Buckley and another soldier rushed an enemy post, killing four of the occupants and taking twenty two prisoners. When the companies advance was again halted by an enemy machine gun post, Cpl Buckley was killed as he tried to cross a bridge and attack the enemy as he had previously. (Donor R. Arman)
