| Description |
English: Alder coppice at Matley Bog, New Forest. Alder is a water-loving tree and is usually found in or around the bogs and watercourses of the New Forest. Most of the alder carrs (swamps) in the Forest have been coppiced at some point in their history, going by their current structure. Alder wood was valued for the fine charcoal that it produces, and charcoal burning was once a significant Forest industry. During the Second World War the charcoal was needed in large quantities for gas mask filters. The alder carr at Matley Bog, roughly 1km long and 100m wide, was last coppiced in the 1950s. The growth in the intervening 50 years can be judged from this photo. It might have been so rapid as to leave the trunks weak - there is a lot of fallen wood on the ground and one snapped trunk can be seen mid-photo.
