[edit]DescriptionAlbert Henry Baskerville's Probate (14344349341).jpg |
On 13 June 1908, the first game of rugby league to be played in New Zealand kicked off at 3pm sharp. Over 6,000 people gathered at Wellington's Athletic Park to watch the All Golds (also known as the 'rebel' All Blacks due to the disapproval of rugby union authorities) play a benefit match to raise money for the widow of Albert Henry Baskerville. Baskerville - a Wellington postal worker, rugby player and author - had in 1907 formed the first New Zealand league team after reading of huge crowds watching the game in England. However their first games were not in New Zealand, but overseas. Dubbed the All Golds because each player had to pay their own way, the team won series in England and Australia, before returning home to promote a game they considered "faster and more skilful" than rugby union. However Baskerville, the 25-year old pioneer of rugby league, was not with them. As Te Ara notes, Baskerville tragically "died of pneumonia in Brisbane only a few days after scoring a try in the inaugural trans-Tasman test match in Sydney." Yet despite his death, and despite hostility from rugby union officials, rugby league was in New Zealand to stay. Baskeville was inducted into New Zealand's Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. The record above is his intestate probate, processed on 12 June 1908 - the day before the historic Wellington match.
