Summary[edit]

Description Seventy years after young men fought and died on remote, windswept Attu Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service honored their sacrifices with the dedication of a new interpretive site to tell the story of WWII in the Aleutians. Veterans Andy Velsko (from left), Bill Pepper, Dan Erickson and Jeff Williams of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge conducted the dedication ceremony in June, complete with taps played on a harmonica in the absence of a bugler.
