its efficient action for the lives of manypassengers and the safety of thousands of dollars worth of propertyabsolutely depend upon the abihty of these brakes to bring the trainto a stop as desired by the engineer. Such a device is the air brakeand the present equipment is so reliable that railroad accidents arealmost never due to any fault of the brakes. ^ The author has chosen the Westinghouse system as being themost typical and most widely used and has carefully analyzed thevarious types of equipment for freight and passenger service.Copious diagrams indicate the action of the brake under variouspositions of the operating lever and rules for operating and care ofthe equipment make the article especially valuable. The articletreats as well the types of equipment which have been developedespecially for electric cars. The treatment of all of the equipmentis strictly up-to-date and should be of value either to the practicalrailroad man or to the layman who wants the know how of things.
