Summary[edit]

Description

An "Air Express" decal on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Railway Express Agency (REA) was a government-owned monopoly established in 1917. There was a huge need to move small packages and postal parcels effectively and efficiently during World War I, but no company existed to do so. American Express and Wells Fargo moved packages, but these were slow, regional companies which could not ramp up quickly to serve national needs during the war. REA primarily moved packages via special express trains.

In 1927, REA began offering Air Express, to move packages via airplanes.

REA existed until 1975. It offered express refrigerator service, but suffered massive losses in the 1950s when refrigerated semi-trailer trucks became common. As the railways became less important in the 1950s and 1960s, REA's finances suffered even more. The construction of the interstate highway system made truck express cost-effective, and REA declared bankruptcy and went out of business in 1975.
