Rückseite: Α-Ι-Γ-Ε-W-Ν - Ν-Ε - Ν-Α [zwei Segmente ohne Buchstaben]. Zodiacus (Tierkreis). Die Buchstaben verteilt in die Segmente. In der Mitte ein geflügeltes Gorgoneion. Kommentar: Dieser außergewöhnliche Münztyp ist nur in zwei Exemplaren bekannt. Vgl. auch F. Haymann, Aigeai. Eine numismatische Stadtgeschichte, NNB 2012, 135-141. 140; Haymann (2014) 136 f.). Die Vorderseite zeigt Valerianus mit dem Attribut des Asklepios: dem Schlangenstab. Durch ihn wie auch durch die Besonderheit der Priesterbinde wird eine Verbindung zum Kult dieses Gottes hergestellt, der seit Severus Alexander an die Neokorie gekoppelt war und in der Münzprägung häufig herausgestellt wurde. Greek Cities and Roman Emperors (2004) 231. - Der Zodiakalkreis ist zwar auch von anderen kilikischen Prägungen bekannt, hier aber als zeitaktuelle Anspielung auf das Alter der Stadt anzusehen. Valerianus hatte im Kontext seines Kampfes gegen den sassanidischen Großkönig Schapur I. Aigeai im Jahr 254 selbst besucht - eben in jenem Jahr, als die Stadt ihr 300. Gründungsjubiläum feierte. Grund genug, um die in diesem Jahr besonders prächtige Münzprägung mit einem Verweis auf die 'Aeternitas' auszustatten. Das zentrale Gorgoneion zielt in eine ähnliche Richtung, denn der Gorgokopf wurde einst von Perseus erbeutet, der als mythischer Stadtgründer galt. Das Stück selbst ist nicht datiert, lässt sich jedoch über Stempelkopplungen der Vs. mit datierten Prägungen des Jubiläumsjahres verbinden. Literatur: F. R. Künker Auktion 115 vom 25.
