| Description |
Painted frieze depicting the Macedonian Symposium. The composition is developed on a surface 3.75 meters long and just 0.35 meters high and includes a total of twenty-five figures painted by a rapid but skilled hand so mas they seem almost in relief, as the deep blue ground enhances the feast of color. At the center are six wreathed symposiasts reclining on three couches with covers in scarlet, violet, and light blue. This classical symposium synthesis is framed by two other scenes that round off its narrative. From the left approaches a band of three men on horseback and their companions on foot, with vessels filled with wine, a contribution to the symposium to which they are invited. At the right edge of the frieze eight men depicted in military attire and fully armed observe the events leaning relaxed on their spears and shiny shields. This representation is without doubt of a symposium of Macedonians, a symposium probably held in the courtyard of the obviously luxurious residence of an eminent person in Macedonian society.
