Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Agatha Christie's "Bathhouse" on the River Dart, Devon. This building, originally part of the old Tudor Court House estate was probably used as a "provisioning house" when the best way to transport goods was by way of the river. Sometime after 1805 it was converted into a bathhouse to facilitate the practice of "Taking the Waters" as popularised by King George the third, which means totally immersing the body in fresh sea-water as a cure for the skin complaints endemic at the time. This lower level plunge pool was once open to the river estuary via a small sluice with which it filled and drained with the rising and falling of the tide. Above is a comfortable room where Agatha Christie once held small informal parties and often used as a quiet retreat to sit and study her manuscripts.
