[edit]DescriptionAfter an Entomological Sale by Edward Armitage, 1878.jpg |
English: Author's photograph, from Pictures and Drawings Selected from the Works of Edward Armitage, 1898 The figure in a top hat standing in the centre and holding a cigarette is a self portrait of the painter Edward Armitage who was a Fellow of the Entomological Society of London. He is surrounded by his friends P.H. Calderon, J.E. Hodgson, F.A. Winkfield and others." "Beati possidentes" is Latin and means "blessed are the owners". The painting was shown at the Paris Salon in 1879 as no 71 'Apres une vente entomologique: felicitations et regards'. The insect collection is most likely that of Edwin Brown of Burton on Trent. |
