Description
English: Heavy haze covered the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Khambhat, and part of western India in late December 2023. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of a portion of the widespread haze on December 28. In addition to the gray haze, several contrails are visible over India. Contrails, also known as condensation trails, are trails of condensed water vapor created by the passage of jet engines. The haze is a visible manifestation of aerosol pollution, likely created by a combination of industrial and auto emissions as well as the burning of coal and biofuels for warmth. Aerosols are tiny particles that float in the air and are emitted both by natural events (such as sandstorms or fires) and human activity. The smallest aerosols are easily breathed into human (and animal) lungs, creating irritation as well as long-term health hazards.
