English: Aerial images of Penrhyn quarry and surrounding Eryri National Park. The Penrhyn quarry is a slate quarry located near Bethesda, North Wales. At the end of the nineteenth century it was the world's largest slate quarry; the main pit is nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) long and 1,200 feet (370 metres) deep, and it was worked by nearly 3,000 quarrymen.
The site is environmentally important because it is adjacent to two important SSSIs and a national nature reserve containing the most important UK populations of a number of rare arctic-alpine plants. The lower altitude parts of the site are also important because they are dominated by several woodland types rare in Europe (e.g. Sessile Oak - Downy Birch |
