DICKENS. Biographical.—Charles Dickens was born on the 7th of February, 1S12,at Landport, Hampshire, where his father was a clerk in the Navy Depart-ment. On the conclusion of the war with Napoleon, the family removedto London, and thence to Chatham. After a second removal to London in1821, it gradually became impoverished, owing to the thriftless habits ofthe father. Improved circumstances, however, in the course of a few years,enabled Dickens to attend school for a short time. When fifteen he en-tered a lawyers office; but not liking its duties he learned the art ofreporting, and obtained employment in connection with the Law Courts.During this period he studied diligently, acquiring also by close observa- :tion that varied experience of life which proved invaluable to him after-wards. At nineteen he became parliamentary reporter for the True Sun,and subsequently tor the Morning Chronicle. Now, also, he added largelyto his knowledge of humanity, for during his leisure hours he wal
