The rainfall on the Colorado pla-teaus is light, because high ranges lieto windward, near the Pacific coast.The higher and cooler parts of theplateau receive the most rainfall.The largest rivers in this region arefed by rains and melting snow on theRocky mountains. These plateaus were formed ages ago by the slow uplifting ofgreat blocks of land, many miles long and wide. The surfaces ofsome of the blocks are a mile or a mile and a half above sea level. The edges of the higher blocks form cliffs a thousand or morefeet high. In many places the rocky layers rise one over another,in broad benches, as shown in a picture on the opposite page.
