ad, and this of coursehinders greatly our progress in the instruction ofthe people. The utter disregard of the Sabbath, also, gambling, cock-fighting, and sensuality, withthe wide-spread prevalence of falsehood, dishonesty, insincerity, and instability—all these mark a moralcondition which is indeed a condition here and notsimply a theory in moral philosophy. It speaksloudly and in unmistakable terms as to the inherentfalseness of moral teaching in the Romish Church, that all the things mentioned above and many othersnot to be described have no place in the catalogueof sins to be repented of as crimes against God.This people need a new moral terminology and dic-tionary. Moral and religious terms which to us ex-press most solemn and momentous truths have forthem no special significance. They are all Chris-tians because all have been baptized and confirmed. And if they must confess to certain faults they classthem all under the head of venial sins, for whichforgiveness is easily obtained.

POTTERY CLASS BASKET WEAVING BROOKS INSTITUTE. GUANTANAMO, CUBA CUBA AS A MISSION FIELD iii Exemplary Converts. Such are the fruits ofRomish education or tlie lack of it. What mighthave been done by the hereditary Church here dur-ing her four centuries of splendid opportunities isexemplified in the exemplary Christian character ofrenewed souls in all our congregations. In sayingthis I do not lose sight of the impulsive, emotional, convulsive, unstable tendencies which may justly becalled characteristic of the Cubans as a people, butwe cannot doubt the power of Gods Spirit accom-panying his Word to overcome all this, as we seein so many cases the firmness under persecution, thefaithfulness in spite of temptations, the self-denialwhen it cuts to the quick, and the liberality abound-ing out of poverty, as w-ell as a tireless spirit ofpropagandism which scores of our incipient Chris-tians display. I am often asked what sort of Chris-tians our Cubans make, and I am always disposedto reply,
