Description
English: Excerpt from letter of Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance, U.S. Navy, to his wife, Margaret Spruance, March 13, 1945. Admiral Spruance wrote this letter during World War II regarding the historic "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" photograph by Joe Rosenthal. This framed excerpt is located at the model of the Marine Corps War Memorial at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.
The text of the letter is: A couple of days ago ? I sent you rolled up in a mailing tube the finest photograph this war has given us up-to-date. It is the Marines raising the U.S. flag on top of Suribachi. When we settle down, I want [to] have this picture framed. Some first class scultpor should do this in bronze, it is so perfect.
