Summary
[edit]DescriptionAddington Village Cricket Ground - geograph.org.uk - 960743.jpg |
English: Addington Village Cricket Ground Although this just looks like a field, it is in fact one of the oldest cricket grounds in England and is still used (although not on the day of photograph). The local cricket club was founded in 1743 when cricket was a relatively new game and the village team in the following years became one of the strongest in England especially during the mid-18th century, frequently taking on opposition of the best of multiple county teams. Indeed in 1740s they issued several challenges to play any team from the rest of England. Although cricket as a game has changed much since those early days, Addington continued to host matches on the village ground across the centuries. From this photograph, it appears a recent fire may have damaged the club house. |
