Rückseite: PHAEDON // NATUS / MDCCXXIX. Totenschädel nach rechts blickend, darauf sitzender Schmetterling. Kommentar: Die Medaille würdigt den Schriftsteller und Philosophen Moses Mendelssohn, der 1729 in Dessau geboren wurde und 1786 in Berlin verstarb. 1743 ging er nach Berlin, wo er auch mit Gotthold Ephraim Lessing und Friedrich Nicolai bekannt wurde. Lessing hat ihm mit der Gestalt des Nathan des Weisen ein literarisches Denkmal gesetzt. Die Komponisten Fanny Hensel und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy sind Enkel des Aufklärers. Die Darstellung bezieht sich auf die Erstausgabe des Werkes 'Phaedon, oder über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele', das 1767 mit einem Titelkupfer von J. W. Meil erschien. Es zeigte Sokrates im Gefängnis sitzend, wie er einen Totenkopf mit einem darüber schwebenden Schmetterling betrachtet. Die Vorderseite der Medaille schuf Abraham Abramson, die Rückseite sein Vater Jacob Abraham. Literatur: T.
