The morale of the Confederate army was,however, much higher at this time than thatof its adversary. It was composed of men notless patriotic, many of whom had gone into thewar with reluctance,but who now felt that theywere defending their homes. They were by thistime nearly all veterans, led by officers havingthe confidence of their government, which tookpains to inspire its soldiers with the same feel-ing. Their successes were extolled and mag-nified ; their reverses palliated or ignored.
