Nobattle was ever more widely discussed orproduced a greater sensation. It revolii-tionizeil the navies of the world. Line-of-battle ships, those huge, overgrown craft,carr)ing from eighty to one hundred andtwenty guns and from five hundred to twelvehundred men, which, from the destructionof the Spanish Armada to our time, haddone most of the fighting, deciding the fateof empires, were at once universally con-demned as out of date.
