Stuarts reportmakes it quite certain that at the time referredto by him. Porter could easily have movedforward from Dawkinss Branch and seizedthe ridge on which are the Hampton, Cole, 460 THE SECOND BATTLE OF BULL RUN. and Monroe houses, from which he wouldhave had a complete view of the field fromright to left. Not only this, but his occupationof that ridge would have connected himclosely with our left, and absolutely preventedLongstreet from forming on Jacksons rightuntiT he had dislodged Porter, which wouldhave occupied him too long to have permittedthe efiective use of his troops for any other Longstreet did not annihilate Porters corpsduring the day if it were so easily in his powerto do so. It is also proper to suggest that itwould have required a long time and all of hisforce to do this annihilating business on sucha corps as Porters; and in that case, whatwould have become of Jacksons right de-prived of Longstreets active support, whichbarely enabled Jackson to hold the ground
