Major Wheat, with characteristicdaring and restlessness, had crossed Bull Runalone by a small ford above the Stone Bridge,in order to reconnoiter, when he and Evanshad first moved to the left, and, falling on someFederal scouts, had shouted a taunting defi-ance and withdrawn, not, however, without hisplace of crossing having been observed. Thisdisclosure was now utilized by Shermans (W.T.) and Keyess brigades of Tylers division;crossing at this point, they appeared over thehigh bank of the stream and moved intoposition on the Federal left. There was nochoice now for Bee but to retire — a move-ment, however, to be accomplished underdifferent circumstances than when urged byhim upon P>ans. The three leaders endeav-ored to preserve the steadiness of the ranksas they withdrew over the open fields, aided THE BATTLE OF BULL RUN.
