When the seceding states were in search of aname, Punch suggested that of Slaveownia, andwhen at the convention held February 9, 1861,at Montgomery, Alabama, they adopted the title ofthe Confederate States of America, Punch re-opened his battery in this fashion: The Southern Secessionists must be admitted to beblessed with at least the philosophical virtue of self-know-ledge. They term this new league the Confederate Statesof America; thus they call themselves by what they doubt-less feel to be their right name. They are confederates inthe crime of upholding slavery. A correct estimate of theirmoral position is manifest in that distinctive denominationof theirs, Confederate States. This title is a beautifulantithesis to that of the United States of America. Could not the negroes of the SouthernStates, if they rose against their masters, say just as much,with at least equal justiee, for their own insurrection ? Theless Mr Davis says about justice and holiness the better,if he does not want to preach a dangerous doctrine, besidesbeing considered a humbug. Dash holiness, and justicebe blanked! is the consistent language for Mr. JeffersonDavis. Might is right; we expect to thrash the Northern-ers; and the Institution of Slavery for ever!
