In fact, disin-tegration of Austria-Hungary added only one new independent stateto the nations of Europe, i. e., Czechoslovakia. By this I do not meanthat the Czechoslovak nation had never formed an independent state,on the contrary, it existed as such long before Austria-Hungary waseven dreamt of (Xth to the beginning of XVII century). What Iwish to make clear is, that dismemberment of Austria did not resultin a multitude of small states, as some writers would have it, andthat the situation in Central Europe has not been much complicatedby the new order of things. Hungarian Russia is the eastermost part ofthe Czechoslovak Republic (see the map). The language of theSlovaks is a beautiful variation of the Czech tongue, and differs solittle from it that he who knows one does not need to learn the otherto understand it. There were many Slovaks of note who wrote in theCzech language, as for example, Jan Kolar, Pavel Safarik and others.During the reformation as well as today, the Slovaks used Czechbibles, song books and prayer books, and their culture has alwaysbeen one with that of the Czechs.
