ame blood. Broughtup in a hard school, Lincoln was early taught manypractical lessons in frugality and economy; but hisnatural kindliness and open-handedness were neverspoiled by penury and need. He never, so say hiscontemporaries, was able to make any money out-side of his profession. The only possession he everhad that was not gained by sheer hard work was atract of wild land in Iowa, given to him by theUnited States Government (as it was to each volun-teer), for his services in the Black Hawk war. Whenhe went to Washington to take the Presidency, thesum total of all his wealth in goods, chattels, lands, and cash was valued at a sum not so great as a singlefee sometimes paid in these later days to a lawyerof the standing and ability he had at that time. I20 Abraham Lincoln Lincoln was thrifty only in the sense of workinghard for what he got and never spending for thatwhich was not absolutely needful for the comfort andhappiness of those dependent upon him. Parsimoni-ous he never was.

CHAPTER IX. LINCOLN THE LAWYER. An Honest Advocate and Counsellor—The Snow Boys and Old ManCase—Famous Lawsuits about Negroes—^Jack Armstrongs Sonon Trial for Murder—Lincolns Vindication of His Old Friend—How the Attorney Looked and Spoke. ly/JENTION has already been made of Lincolns^ ^ *• immovable honesty. This was not only con-spicuous in his dealings with men, but in his courseas a politician and a lawyer. No man more than heever made so many concessions to his opponents ina discussion, and yet succeeded in convincing thosewho were to be carried by his argument, whether itwas a jury in a law-case, or an audience of the peoplein a political canvass. Sometimes, those who werewith him, but did not, perhaps, understand hismethods, were dismayed as they heard him give awaypoint after point in the case that he presented.Their surprise, therefore, was very great when hebegan to sum up and, by the force of his reasoning, won his suit. This was because he knew his casethoroughly
