this charge General Rodes lost hislife—a damage not compensated by the momentarysuccess. The tide was instantly turned by a chargeof equal gallantry from the National side attendedby an equal calamity. A brigade of General D. A.Russells division, led by Russell and Upton inperson, rushed with splendid courage and swiftnessinto the gap, struck the advancing Confederates inflank, driving them back and taking many prisoners,and reestablished the Union line — but the gallantand devoted Russell fell dead at the moment of hisvictory.
