None ofMiss Nicolays letters are type-written. About half of them arewritten on mourning station-ery as her father died in 1901. While the information con-tained in these letters is notparticularly earth-shaking, theydo reveal little insights into thecharacters of the principals in-volved, and the literary abilitiesof the authors, particularly JohnHay. Anyway, there is some un-explainable fascination in thereading of private correspond-ence, whether the writers areliterate or not. R. G. M. John George Nicolay,private secretary to Presi-dent Abraham Lincoln, andco-author with John Hayof several works on thelife of the great WarPresident, died on Septem-ber 27, 1901 at the ageof seventy years. From the Lincoln National Life Foundation John George Nicolay1832-1901Biographer, born in Essingen, Bavaria; came to the UnitedStates in 1838; private secretary to Abraham Lincoln (1860-65); U. S. Consul at Paris (1865-69); Marshal of U. S.Supreme Court (1872-87); collaborator with John Hay in abiography of Abraham Lincoln (1890), and in an edition ofthe complete works of Abraham Lincoln. This original portraitof Nicolay was painted by his daughter, Helen Nicolay. in 1887 had beenliving quietly at 212 B Street, S.E., in Washington, D.C.with Helen, his only daughter. His wife, Therena Bates,whom he had married on June 15, 1865, died in Novem-ber, 1885, when Helen was nineteen years of age. During these last yearsof Nicolays retirement,he and his daughter hadbeen engaged in writing aone volume biography ofAbraham Lincoln, whichwould be a condensation ofNicolay and Hays monu-mental ten volume work,Abraham Lincoln: A His-tory.
