here again we could understand howthe Chinese can so readily grasp the biblical descriptionof the Saviours tomb. Our trip was marred by only one incident. Ourtrain struck a man who was walking on the track. Webacked up and found him feebly gasping by the sideof the track where the engine had thrown him. As wehad no doctor on board, we left him and went on tosecure aid at the next station, only a short distanceaway. We heard afterward, however, that he livedbut a short time. We reached Canton about seven oclock, but dark-ness had already settled down as we pulled into thestation. After much delay on account of the baggage,of which our party had considerable, and hagglingwith the coolies as to the price of transferring it, weboarded what was called a trolley-car—^but what wasin reality much like a hand-car on our railroads inAmerica—and proceeded the mile and a half backdown the track to the mission compound. It had beena strenuous day, and we were thankful to reach ourjourneys end.

It was verytouching to see the blind girls, as the bread and winewere placed in their hands; but we rejoiced that theirspiritual eyes had been opened, even though theirnatural sight was darkened. A funeral passing the church, just as the pastorbegan his sermon, made such a disturbance with itsweird music and firecrackers that it was necessary togive out a hymn to hold the congregation. On this mission compound lived all
