14 A TRIP TO THE ORIENT. I made very few notes, she replied. As we are .tobe in Funchal but one day, 1 skipped the statistics ofpopulation, hotels, exports, and histor>^ But hereare some facts just as I jotted them down: The Madeira Islands, about six hundred miles westof Gibraltar, were settled by the Portuguese and areowned by Portugal. The principal and only town large enough to becalled a city is Funchal, situated on the southern sideof Madeira on the slope of a hill. The city has an equable climate. Mild sunshine,gentle ocean breezes, and protection from harsh windsby mountains, give to Funchal throughout the wholeyear the temperature of England in the month of May. The island is very mountainous, gashed with manydeep gorges which extend in from the sea. The streetsin the city are paved, but the roads in the country areimpassable for wagons.
