over the National Highway toAlgiers, 245 kilometers distant. For the firsttwenty odd kilometers we ran along the banks ofthe River Quedsahel, and then at El Kseur, webegan climbing the mountain side. Some of thegradients of this mountain road are pretty stiff,the average being from six to ten per cent. Atthe Col de Tigdint we reached an altitude of 3,000feet. We were particularly fortunate to encounterno snow on this run. A most interesting side journey can be made tothe fort at the summit of Col de Tolmetz, wheresome magnificent views of the country are to beseen. Needless to say we seized the opportunityto view the surrounding country from such acapital point of vantage, and fine indeed was theappearance of the landscape spread out below. Itshowed very fertile in places, and was dotted withsmall Bedouin huts, and here and there a pic-turesque but dilapidated-looking village. It wasvery cold on the summit, so that we were glad ofthe protection afforded by the cars glass screen, (116)

Some fewbad spots were being repaired, and gangs of menare kept constantly at work; it is only a questionof time when these imperfect places will get theproper attention. After passing through several dense forests onthe top of the mountain, we reached the otherside of the plateau and began our slide down thewestern side of the range. We passed through thelittle villages of Yacouran and Azazga in rapidsuccession, and reached Tamda, where we wereonce more at an elevation of only some 700 feetabove the sea. For the remainder of our drive to Algiers theroad passes through an undulating country withnothing more serious to encounter than one shortclimb over an elevation of about 700 feet.
