Adjoining it, but distinct from it, is the Abbeyof Holyrood, founded by David I., in 11 28. The palace is opento visitors, and contains many objects of interest. Among theseare the apartments of the ill-fated Queen Mary. Here she wasmarried to Darnley; here Rizzio was murdered; and here theQueen was married to her third husband, the Earl of Bothwell. Edinburgh contains many noble institutions devoted to litera-ture, science, and art, and these are of so high a character as tohave won for the city the proud name of the Modern Athens. St. Giless Cathedral is the principal church. It is an irregularGothic building, said to have been founded in the Ninth Century,and rebuilt in 1359.
