accumulating in the coal bunkers below theprotective deck, pipes G (see plans) are led from them into thefunnel casing; and to supply the partial vacuum thus created,fresh air flows through tubes H led into the bunkers from theventilating shafts V. To supply fresh air to the spaces above andbelow the watertight platform W W, a steam fan S is stationed onthe platform, and draws air from the foremost of the shafts Vthrough a large supply trunk I. This air is forced by the faninto the trunk K and finds its way out through louvres into thecompartments through which K passes. A number of pipes alsolead from this trunk to supply the magazines, shell rooms, &c., asindicated in the Plate. Arrangements are made so that thetrunk I can be connected to one of the steam fans in the foremostboiler room, which fan can therefore be used to ventilate the forepart of the vessel in the event of the one on the platform breakingdown. The shell hoist P, primarily fitted for the conveyance of Plate X\^
