It therefore appears that all the meanswe have yet confidered for the removalcf thefe excrefcences, are either inadequatefor the efFedj or altogether inadmiffible %and hence we are under the neceffityof employing either the method by li-gature, or that by extradion with theforceps. As the removal of a polypus, by tearingor twifting it ofF, is attended with muchmore pain than the application of a liga-ture round the neck of it, the latter wouldalways have been preferred, if it had beenconfidered as equally practicable. And aswe now know that it can be done in avery fafe and eafy manner, it will proba-bly in future be very generally employed.The method we allude to, is that whichMonfieur Levrette of Paris firft recom-mended Pr.ATK. Ioa mended, a confiderable time ago, for theremoval of polypi in the vagina, and whichwe now find may be \ifed with equal pro-priety in fimilar affedions of the nofe andthroat. The following is the method ofapplying it in polypi of the throat. Fig. I. Plate XLIV. reprefencs apiece ofpliable filver wire pafTed through a doublecanula,and the wire fhould be long enoughwhen doubled as to pafs through the nofeinto the pharynx. Let the wire be takenfrom the canula, and the doubling at theend of it be flowly and gently infinuatedthrough one of the noftrils: As foon asit appears in the throat, the operator, withhis fingers inferted into the mouth, muftopen the double fufSciently for paffing icover the pendulous extremity of the tu-mor ; and having prefled it down to theneck or root of it, the two ends of the li-gature hanging out at the noftril muft beagain paflfed through the canula; which isnow to be inferted into the fame noftril,5iud pulhed
